Configuring ArcGIS To Use The what3words Locator

Configuring the what3words Locator for ArcGIS for Desktop

Getting Started

  1. Sign up for a what3words account at developer.what3words.com/.
  2. Once you've signed up and verified your account, just send an email to arcgis@what3words.com to request that your API key is enabled for ArcGIS and we’ll set you up for a 14 day free trial
  3. Once your API key is enabled, we'll email you your what3words locator credentials; the username will be your API key and you'll also be notified of your locator password

Add the what3words Locator to ArcMap

  1. If the Geocoding toolbar is not active within ArcMap, you’ll need to enable this. From the Customize menu, select Toolbars and click on Geocoding.
  2. On the Geocoding toolbar, select the dropdown menu to the right of the currently selected geocoding service (by default this is the World Geocode Service) and select .
  3. The Address Locator Manager dialog will appear, click on Add. (The Address Locator Manager dialog can also be displayed from the File menu and then clicking through Add Data ..., Geocoding and Address Locator Manager).
  4. The Add Address Locator dialog will then be displayed.
  5. Select GIS Servers from the Look in: drop down menu.
  6. Select Add ArcGIS Server and click on Add.
  7. The Add ArcGIS Server dialog will appear. Select Use GIS Services and click on Next.
  8. Specify the Server URL :

    English – https://arcgis.what3words.com/w3w/rest/services/what3words_EN_English/GeocodeServer

    The user name is your what3words API key. Your password will be sent to you once you have emailed arcgis@what3words.com requesting that your key is enabled for ArcGIS. Ensure Save Username/Password is checked and then click on Finish.

  9. In the Add Address Locator dialog, highlight w3w on arcgis.what3words.com (user) and click on Add.
  10. Highlight what3words and click on Add.
  11. The what3words locator has now been added and configured as the active address locator for ArcMap. Click on Close to end the Add Address Locator process.
  12. In addition to locating 3 word addresses in the Find Location tool, 3 word addresses can be discovered via the Address Inspector tool, located to the right of the Geocoding toolbar.

Configuring the what3words Locator for ArcGIS Online

Getting Started

  1. Sign up for a what3words account at developer.what3words.com/.
  2. Once you've signed up and verified your account, just send an email to arcgis@what3words.com to request that your API key is enabled for ArcGIS and we'll take care of it.
  3. Once your API key is enabled, we'll email you your what3words locator credentials; the username will be your API key and you'll also be notified of your locator password
  4. To use the what3words locator within ArcGIS Online you'll need a valid ArcGIS Online account which is part of an organisation; if you're unsure whether your account meets this prerequisite, please talk to your ArcGIS Online administrator

Adding the what3words Locator to ArcGIS Online

  1. Login to your ArcGIS Online account and select the My Content tab. Click on Add Item and select From the web. 1. Login to your ArcGIS Online account and select the My Content tab. Click on Add Item and select From the web.
  2. The Item from the web dialog will appear. Ensure the Type of item is set to ArcGIS Server web service and specify the URL:

  3. ArcGIS Online will detect that the what3words locator requires authentication. The user name is your what3words API key. Your password will be sent to you once you have emailed arcgis@what3words.com requesting that your key is enabled for ArcGIS.
    Ensure that Store credentials is selected and enter a descriptive title (e.g. Find a 3 word address) and any tags you want associated with the locator. Then click on Add Item to save the locator definition. 3.   4. A summary of the what3words locator will be shown. Either note down the URL shown under the ArcGIS Web API Rest Connection heading, or select and copy the URL for later use.   7. You will now need to add a custom geocoder to your ArcGIS Online environment. By default the Esri World Geocoder is already configured and you can add a new geocoder definition by clicking on Add Geocoder. 7.   8. The Add Geocoder dialog will appear. Enter or paste the URL saved in stage 4 above as the Geocoder URL. Enter a Geocoder Name, the Placeholder Text that you want to be displayed in the search box and ensure Allow place finding and Allow batch geocoding are selected, then click on OK. 8.   9. When the Add Geocoder dialog closes, ensure that you scroll to the bottom of the Utility Services page and click on SAVE.   10. The what3words locator has now been successfully created and configured in your ArcGIS Online environment. If you view a previously created map or create a new map, you will now see that the locator is available as a geocoder option in the search box. 10.
